AP Worthy?

I would say that it is worth reading in an AP English class. This book is brimming with topics for discussion, from its themes such as captivity, topics like creation myths, to the author's critical, blunt writing style and his use of the Socratic teaching method. Overall, I liked this book, the first half in particular because I found myself agreeing with most of it. As the book progressed, I found myself questioning Ishmael, the author, and a few of the ideas that I was reading. The best quality that this book has is its ability to trigger your own deep thinking, about not only the topics and ideas suggested in its pages but in everyday conflicts and issues that we often face. It also makes you think about how we are treating the environment as individuals as well as a group. I have read some reviews on the novel and have found that people are prone to either love or despise the book. Some think it is enlightening and life changing where others think the whole thing is too didactic. I encourage whoever is reading this to pick this work of literature up whenever you get the chance because even if you end up disliking it altogether, it is a great way to exercise your mind and practice a different way of thinking.

  1. You have a clear discussion of why this novel is AP worthy. The novel seems to intertwine the different themes together of the novel along with the author's stylistic views. This book seems unique to other AP books as you said it focuses on how you think and the exercise of your mind! Great job, sounds like a good read!

    1. Thank you so much, Sarah! It was definitely unique and different from the books I'm used to but that is not at all a bad thing. If you ever find a copy, I recommend that you pick it up!

  2. I really enjoyed this post and agreed with a lot of it. Personally, I wouldn't give it to an AP English class simply because I think it would be hard to integrate into an essay on the exam, but I agree with everything else about it being thought provoking and providing good topics to discuss.

    1. Joe, I understand your reasons on why this novel could be difficult to write an essay on, but my opinion differs from thine. Ishmael could prove a treasure chest full of essay topics. Brilliant essays on Quinn's ideas and purpose are itching to find paper. A controversial book like Ishmael seems appropriate for AP students, as it would really get their heads spinning with thoughts over the meaning in the writing.
